WWF study says forests can help prevent climate change

According to the WWF’s ‘Climate Solutions 2’ report, which has been released in advance of the Climate Change forum taking place in Copenhagen later this year, forestry needs to play a large part in slowing climate change.
The report says that the problem has to be tackled from both sides: emissions need to be cut, but carbon removal projects also have to be used to help prevent damaging temperature increases.
An effective way to remove carbon from the air is through growing more forests. The report outlines the use of wood for carbon storage and calls for reforestation programmes. It adds that there is plenty of potential for reducing fossil fuel use through the use of woody biomass in the generation of biofuels.
Far from proving a financial strain, the WWF claims that the extra investment in sectors such as forestry will produce profits and savings by the late 2020s.
The report adds that relying on carbon trading, taxes and emissions trading is not sufficient in the fight against climate change. A move towards greater investment in sustainable forestry could however make a real difference.
