Wales to use biomass fuels for 20% of energy by 2020
25/02/2009
An ambitious plan has been announced by the Welsh government, to generate 20% of its energy from biomass sources by 2020, in order to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
The plan, which will see at least five terawatt hours of electricity being generating from renewable biomass sources, is intended to reduce carbon emissions by three million tonnes each year. Wales also hopes to generate around 3% of the heat energy it needs, or around 2.5 terawatt hours, by 2020.
The biomass sources are likely to include wood, animal waste, plants, forestry waste, sewage and vegetation.
Jane Davidson, the environmental minister says the plan is vital for reducing fossil fuel reliance, "biomass has the potential to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, whilst at the same time cutting our carbon emissions.” She also claims the scheme will create jobs.
The plan is the latest in a string of measures to increase the use of bio-fuels. One such project is the use of the Strategic Capital Investment Fund to help develop sources of wood energy for hospitals and schools.
