US forestry programmes focus on climate change benefits

30/11/2009
United States Forest Services (USFS) forestry programmes, such as the Sisters Ranger District region’s forestry protection schemes, are now accepting that climate protection is a major benefactor of their efforts.

The Sisters Ranger District’s environmental coordinator, Michael Keown, says the carbon absorption characteristics of trees were never a priority. He explained, “we’ve always said that’s outside the scope of this project. But those days have come and gone.”

Instead the priorities were to protect forests against wildfires and other threats like infestations and disease.

The USFS’s programmes have always been important in terms of conservation. However, on the realisation that the country’s forests store 15 per cent of the carbon produced by the country, the protection of the forests seems even more essential.

Some experts are now claiming that if larger, more resilient trees were planted, the carbon capture potential of the US’s forests could grow to 50 per cent. In turn this could help the US to maintain its industrial output through a carbon trading scheme, thus making forests and trees a
valuable commodity to US industry.

However, experts are also keen to point out the importance of continued forestry investment to protect forests from fires and disease in the future.
