UK Forestry Commission makes sustainability central to Forestry Standard

06/07/2009
The UK Forestry Commission, working with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, is to revise the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) to put more emphasis on climate change mitigation.

The Forestry Commission is inviting comments on the revision which will look at ways that carbon benefits can be maximized and will go hand-in-hand with a new set of guidelines that gives advice on woodland management in a changing climate.

Sustainable forestry is the main topics covered by the UKFS, which aims to make sure that forestry management fulfills certain criteria in terms of issues such as conservation and preventing pollution.

Also covered in the UKFS is the criteria for eligibility for Forestry Commission grants, planning approvals and felling licenses. Best practice issues within the fields of protection of landscape and heritage, planning and community consultation is also set out in the UKFS.

Hilary Benn, the secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs, says: “a principal role of the UKFS is, therefore, to demonstrate that international protocols on sustainable forest management, agreed at European and global levels, are applied in an appropriate way to forest management in the UK."
