Timber prices on the rise, says index

15/02/2010
The price of timber and various timber products has risen despite the economic slowdown, according to the WRQ Global Wood Fiber Price Indices.

The indices looked at the prices of both softwood and hardwood and found they both rose over the past four quarters. The Hardwood Wood Fiber Price Index reached $106.19/odmt. in the fourth quarter, which is 7 per cent higher than the quarter before.

Over 2009 as a whole, the hardwood price index increased by 15.4 per cent. This is third highest level since the index was launched in 1988.

In terms of price increases, the highest rises in the fourth quarter were seen in Germany, Finland Spain and Australia.

The Softwood Wood Fiber Price Index also increased during the final quarter of 2009, rising 5.6 per cent to $98.34/odmt. These results were mainly attributable to higher wood fibre costs in countries including Sweden, Finland and the US.

The global wood fibre price report has readers in 25 countries around the world and tracks prices of pellets, sawlogs, lumber and pulpwood in key forestry regions. It also regularly updates the industry with developments in the pulp, lumber, biomass and general international timber market.
