Timber firms in Idaho feel positive about 2010
25/01/2010
Timber firms in Idaho claim they are positive about the year ahead as the construction industry picks up.
Timber trade group Western Wood Products Association says its members are hopeful for a recovery this year after the industry bottomed out in 2009.
Robert Bernhardt, spokesperson for the Association, explained, “there’s been some encouraging signs in terms of foreclosures, and home prices have flattened or even picked up a little bit. That’s a key thing.”
Brett Bennett, from local lumber firm Bennett Lumber, had to close his night shift last year during the lowest point for the industry. However, he is hopeful that the firm will be able to reopen the night shift and take on more employees in the coming year. “We’re pretty confident and comfortable with our position and figured we would be OK after making the moves,” he said, adding “hopefully things will come back up, and if things start to go back, heck, it might not be long until we put the night shift back on.”
As the house building and construction industry starts to grow again this year as the recession draws to an end, countries including the US and New Zealand are already starting to see vast improvements in the market for timber, and timber prices are responding well.
