Thousands attending Argentinean sustainable forestry congress

The World Forestry Congress is being held in Buenos Aires at the moment and some 5,000 delegates from international forestry industries are attending, with the attention firmly set on sustainable forestry.
In these times of climate change awareness, the industry is also aware that sustainability is the new buzz-word for forestry. The congress attendees will be looking at ways to save the world’s forests along with discussing ways in which trees can be used to help reduce climate change.
The first speaker was Jacques Diouf of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. He called for the governments attending the Climate Change Summit, being held later this year in Copenhagen, to increase investment in the sector.
He stated, “financial stimulus is needed to take positive actions. It is hoped that at the Copenhagen summit in December steps will be taken to make greater investment in sustainable forest management."
The congress will also discuss measures to prevent bushfires which rage in countries like Australia and the US. These release thousands of tons of carbon into the atmosphere and are a direct example of the destructive effects of climate change.
