Sustainable Christmas trees more popular than ever

25/12/2009
Such is the popularity of having a real, sustainably grown tree in the home at Christmas, the Forestry Commission says it has nearly run out of them.

The commission says its two sites in Dorset, the Moors Valley Country Club in Ringwood and New Park in Brokenhurst, both ran out well before Christmas. It says it sold some 3,000 from the two sites by 15 December, well ahead of the planned last day of the sale, which was scheduled for 20 December.

The trees that the commission produced are sustainable and the popularity of its trees this year is being linked with the fact that more people are environmentally aware. The commission’s head ranger, Andrew Norris, said, “all our trees are sustainably grown, and this year more of our customers have told us that is important.”

However, he added that many of its customers are expected to go away disappointed this year. He said, “we can only apologise to them for a situation which is entirely beyond our control. We understand that other local suppliers are experiencing similar difficulties.”

The news goes further to cement the fact that there is a growing demand for sustainably produced trees and wood.
