Scottish sawmill starts operating
12/10/2009
A new £20 million sawmill has started operation in southern Scotland.
Some 85 people are to be employed at the sawmill once it is in full operation later in 2009. It is being run by James Jones and Sons and is expected to produce over 240,000 cubic metres of sawn timber each year.
The plant’s general manager, Eddie Balfour, says that the mill has been a 'long term plan'. He added that the firm considers there to be enough of a market despite the recession: "we wouldn't have spent this money if we did not think there were 20 years of timber supplies in front of us. It's the fruition of a long-term plan which started when we purchased the site more than ten years ago."
He added that the wood produced at the mill will mainly be shipped and used in the UK’s main construction centres in Manchester, London and Birmingham.
The site was first proposed in 2007, contributing more much needed investment in the Lockerbie area. The company says the plant was expanded as a result of a strong existing skills base and plenty of surrounding forests.
