Partner for $2.2 billion Tasmanian pulp mill established
29/06/2009
Tasmanian pulp firm, Gunns Ltd, has announced that it is in the final stages of arranging a joint venture to build the $2.2 billion Bell Bay pulp mill.
The investment has been welcomed by local timber workers as the project is expected to create as many as 1,600 jobs once the mill is operational.
The joint venture has been agreed following a Timber Communities Australia report, which found that the mill will be one of the cleanest in the world in terms of air quality and odour.
Tasmania’s Federal Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry minister, Tony Burke, has strongly endorsed the mill project, which will only process plantation wood. In addition, Tasmanian Premier, Dave Bartlett, also welcomed the news of the deal stating "coupled with Minister Burke's statement supporting the construction of the Bell Bay pulp mill last week, this announcement brings Tasmania closer to realising the economic benefits a clean, modern pulp mill would bring."
Bartlett added that the project has the full support of the government, "this government supports the development of value-adding and environmentally sustainable projects."
