Next stage of Flambeau River Biofuels plant up and running
30/10/2009
The next stage is underway in the development of the largest second-generation green diesel plant in the US.
Flambeau River BioFuel LLC’s project will involve converting wood produced in Wisconsin into biomass-based diesel. The next step in its development involves a pilot test of the conversion of wood into biofuels and waxes. This will take place next week at the South Research Institute Facility in North Carolina.
“We need to operate [the pilot facility] for 1,000 hours to meet the requirements for a DOE loan guarantee and we need to prove the mass energy balance to make sure we have a project,” explained Bob Byrne, the president of Flambeau River Biofuels.
The trial will turn Wisconsin wood into fuel via a biomass gassifier which has been designed by ThermoChem Recovery International.
It is hoped that the firm will be able to ensure the practices are viable. The plant is intended to produce 18 MMgy of FT waxes and liquids form 250,000 dry tons of woody biomass each year. The plant is also expected to supply steam for use in the paper mill next door.
