New Zealand to vote on forestry and biofuel bill
24/06/2009
Two new bills to ensure that New Zealand’s biofuel industry remains sustainable are to go before the House for a vote after being drawn from the Member’s Ballot.
The first bill has been put forward by the Green Party’s Jeanette Fitzsimons, rules that food crops should not be used in New Zealand’s biofuels developments and instead sustainable biomass, such as the byproducts of sustainable forestry, should be used to produce biofuel. The bill is a reaction to the government’s recent subsidy for biofuels, which dropped sustainability standards.
The second bill, which was also submitted by the Green Party, is called the Customs and Excise Amendment Bill and encourages the production of certified sustainable timber products and generally promotes sustainable forestry. This bill was drafted by the Green Party Forestry Spokesperson, Catherine Delahunty.
Delahunty says the bill would provide a more even playing field for New Zealand wood producers and would prevent illegal logging by only importing sustainable wood into the country.
The two bills, if passed could help promote the sustainable forestry industry in New Zealand, attracting investment in both forestry and biofuel development.
