Irish Forestry Awards reward sustainable forestry industry

23/10/2009
Last night Kilkenny Castle played host to the 2009 Irish Forestry Awards, presented by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s minister Tony Killeen.

The annual awards recognise the efforts of forest owners and farmers who employ sustainable forestry management techniques on their land.

Sustainable forestry has become increasingly important in the face of growing climate change fears. The industry now widely agrees that sustainability is key to protecting the industry and the forests for generations to come.

Awards included the Bio-diverse Forest/Woodland award, which was won by Kerry County Council, and the Farm Forestry award, which was won this year by John O’Connell.

Winners were involved in sustainable forestry projects but were also rewarded for their environmental protections, commercial management, social amenity and biodiversity efforts.

Minister Killeen stated that the awards played a part in boosting general awareness about the importance of forestry in Ireland, and particularly the importance of sustainable forestry. He stated, “I would like to congratulate the category winners and hope that the acknowledgement and reward of excellence through these Awards will continue to create awareness of what is required to manage our forests to the highest standards possible and indeed the high standards that can be achieved".
