Indonesia may introduce logging moratorium

11/01/2010
Greenpeace's Southeast Asia representative says Indonesia is close to being able to strike a logging moratorium in the coming year.

He stated, "We are optimistic that the Indonesian government can start greenhouse gas cutting emission by imposing a moratorium on all logging activity in 2010.” The move is necessary to make sure that forests in the country are restored and operated sustainably, thus cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Trees are vital in the fight against climate change as they absorb CO2 gases and store them. As a result, deforestation can lead to higher emissions.

The Greenpeace spokesperson added that it is the responsibility of the country’s government to introduce the moratorium on logging. He added, "In our view, it's easy for the government through the forestry ministry as the highest forestry authority, to impose a moratorium on all logging activity.”

Indonesia has reaffirmed its intentions to take part in the world’s attempts to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. The country has pledged to cut 700 megatons of emissions by 2020. This is equal to cutting 700 million metric tons of CO2. Greenpeace says the moratorium need not be costly for the country.
