Increasing forest cover could boost bio fuel as viable alternative

29/01/2010
As the number of bio fuel and wood fuel production plants continues to grow in the UK and Europe, with plans for major projects in Port Talbot and elsewhere, the UK needs more trees to convert to wood fuel. So where is the wood going to come from?

The Energy Technologies Institute says that ten per cent of the country’s surface area could be converted into plantations for growing trees and crops for bio fuel purposes.

Fast-growing tree crops such as willow and eucalyptus could be planted in the UK, and a government-funded project to map the best potential sites for such forestry projects is underway.

Areas like disused industrial estates, moorland and hillsides could be used for these sustainable forestry projects.

The UK currently imports more than five times as much wood as it produces. Now, 16 new biomass plant projects are underway and all are being built in areas with easy access to imported timber from countries like Canada, Brazil and South Korea where sustainable forestry investment in growing.

As a result of the new biomass plants, the amount of wood imported into the UK is expected to grow by 150 per cent – thus boosting income for forestry investors abroad.
