Green Resources to invest heavily in Mozambique forest project
08/02/2010
The Nampula Province of Mozambique is set to receive a huge investment, much of which will go towards developing sustainable forestry in the region.
Some 14 projects are set to benefit from the $2.3 billion worth of funding from the Investment Promotion Centre, according to the Noticias newspaper.
Although many kinds of projects, from candle-making to cattle breeding, are to benefit, a major part of the scheme is the development of the region’s forests for the paper industry.
A total of around 8,112 jobs are expected to be created this year because of the investment, 7,500 of which will come from Norway-based Green Resources. The firm is investing in the country in order to exploit its land for the plating of 180,000 hectares of trees over a 15-year period.
Green Resources' $30 million projects intends to transform forest products for other uses, mainly pulp paper.
Green Resources refers to itself as, “a plantation, carbon offset, forest products and renewable energy company.” It has invested $55 million in African projects since it was established in 1995 and it employs 3,000 people. It currently operated over 14,000 hectares of forested land in Africa.
