Funding of £100,000 to tackle Phytophthora in Wales

24/03/2010
The Forestry Commission has announced that it is allocating £100,000 of funding to woodland owners in Wales to tackle the problem of Phytophthora there.

The forestry invesment will be available to woodland owners in the Dyfi valley of Powys, in the east of Wales, specifically to help combat Phytophthora ramorum and Phytophthora kernoviae.

The Dyfi valley in Wales was subject to an outbreak of Phytophthora ramorum in 2009. For this reason it has been chosen by the Forestry Commission for special funding.

The new funding will be used for the removal of rhododendron in a control zone in the area, as Rhododendron ponticum is one of the plants that hosts Phytophthora.

Applications for the funding, which is available through the Better Woodlands for Wales grant scheme from the Forestry Commission Wales, must be submitted by the end of February 2011. All applications must be made using a trained management planner approved by the scheme.

In addition to granting this funding, the Forestry Commission in Wales is also working together with the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) to locate and remove Rhododendron that are infected.
