Forestry Commission supports new National Park

02/04/2010
The Forestry Commission has announced that the South Downs National Park, which covers an area in excess of 5,800 hectares in the south of the country, has now become designated.

A large part of the National Park is managed by the Forestry Commission. The Park includes open landscape and woodland and covers scenic areas as varied as woodland in Hampshire to white chalk heathland close to Eastbourne.

With this new initiative, the Forestry Commission will collaborate with a range of government and non-government bodies, including local communities and charities, to support the South Downs National Park Authority to preserve and enhance the area.

Through active woodland management, the Commission is already working to enhance the landscape and surrounding wildlife. In addition, it supplies educational and recreational facilities to the public, to help them enjoy the area of natural beauty.

The initiative ties in with the Forestry Commission’s policy of putting woodland at the heart of the community for people in the UK to meet, learn, play and exercise.

The Director of the Forestry Commission in the South East, David Williamson, said: “We are thrilled to be part of the new National Park. The identity of this beautiful landscape is one of diversity, which is very fitting for both the communities it supports and its wildlife.” He went on to explain: “It also ties in well with the International Year of Biodiversity, which is being celebrated worldwide this year.”
