Forestry and conservation projects get investment in Scotland
01/01/2010
Millions of trees are to be planted across Scotland as the result of an investment programme announced by the Scottish government yesterday.
Some £60 million in funding is to be invested in conservation projects, forestry projects and renewable energy schemes in a bid to boost the amount of sustainable forestry in the country.
The funding is part of the sixth round of the Rural Priorities Scheme, which in turn, is part of the Scottish Rural Development Programme. Overall, the scheme has so far approved £257.8 million in funding for 3,600 rural projects in the country. The programme is intended to help the rural areas of Scotland to develop within seven years.
Richard Lochead, the environment secretary, said, “the funding provided will see millions of trees planted across Scotland, including 1.5 million in the Highlands and Islands area alone, making a significant contribution to our target on forestry cover."
He continued, "rare species and habitats will also receive enhanced protection on farmland and other areas where we want to see them flourish." "The Rural Priorities scheme is an important means of mitigating climate change in Scotland."
