Finnish firm prepares to produce biofuels from forest waste

13/02/2009
An executive from Finnish forestry and paper company, UPM-Kymmenesaid, has suggested that among the first of the new generation of biofuels to come into production will be those made from forestry waste.

These second generation biofuels are intended to replace the food-crop based fuels originally looked at, but that caused so many controversies across the globe.
UPM itself is planning to begin expanding into biofuels, undertaking trials in the production of bioethanol, biodeisel and heavy fuel oils from residue such as stumps, twigs and bark.

"According to our plans we should have the necessary information in our hands to make decisions about the first large scale commercial unit by the middle of this year," says the firm’s vice president of corporate relations and development, Hans Sohlstrom.

He adds that production could begin in 2012/2013 if the initial trials are successful and that investment could involve hundreds of millions of Euros. UPS considers this a growth industry and that waste from forestry is available for use for biofuel all over the world, "we believe there are large volumes of residues that could be used for biofuel production in Europe and elsewhere," says Sohlstrom.
