Canadian Premier says forestry presents opportunities
23/01/2009
Speaking at the Northern Economics Summit, the British Columbian Premier, Gordon Campbell, has suggested that the forestry industry could be the key to Northern Canada weathering the economic storm.
During the two-day summit, Campbell highlighted the affect the economic slump was having on the region’s people. He said, “this is a critical time for our province…It’s time to think first and foremost about families.”
He insisted the province will continue to introduce measures to protect the forestry industry from the downturn. The policymakers have already passed a law that allows the building of wooden structure up to six storeys high. “In British Columbia wood is going to be the building product of choice. Wood first, wood best,” says Campbell.
The government plans to extend the six-storey policy to Saskatchewan and Alberta, to boost the demand for forestry products in those provinces.
Other plans include the use of forest that has been killed by mountain pine beetle for generating energy. Campbell suggests there could be an export opportunity in using this resource to generate clean energy. “Down in the U.S. they are energy hungry. We are Canada’s new energy powerhouse,” he says.
