Canadian government invests in green technology for forest products

24/05/2010
The Canadian government has announced a $22 (£14.6) million investment in J.D. Irving Limited (JDI) pulp and paper company to help it to produce clean energy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

The investment was announced by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, under the Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program (PPGTP).

Minister Ashfield explained: "This project shows that with smart investments in green technologies, pulp mills can increase their clean energy production, improve their environmental performance and still provide important forest products to consumers."

He went on to explain that the Canadian government wishes to lay the groundwork for a greener and more prosperous future for the pulp and paper industry in Canada, and its workers.

JDI is among 24 pulp and paper companies in the country that has qualified for funding under the $1 billion (£670 million) project.

Jim Irving, President of JDI, commented: "We appreciate the commitment of the federal and provincial governments to securing hundreds of good-paying forest sector jobs at this mill and in the woodlands that supply this site.”

“These investments in efficiency are good for business,” he added.
