Canadian government invests in Alberta forests
03/02/2010
Forestry investment is coming to forest owners in Alberta, Canada, in the form of extra funding from the government.
Almost CA$7 million is being handed over to help forestry workers and the forests themselves in the Alberta region of the country. It is hoped the funding will help to create jobs in the region and improve the quality of the forests in Alberta.
The investment will specifically be spent in 6,000 hectares of ‘cutblocks’, which are forests on publically-owned land. The money will go towards helping projects that support the care and development of the forests.
The government says that long-term economic benefits will arise from the investment as it will boost productivity and the value generated from the forests.
Trevor Wakelin, the president of the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta, said, "this is the type of initiative that provides direct employment in the forestry sector and makes tangible improvements to public forest.”
The region’s forestry industry has suffered somewhat over recent years as a result of the fall in housing construction in Canada and the US, and because of the economic downturn in general.
