Brazilian government to stimulate forestry in Cerrado
19/03/2010
Under a new action plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Cerrado, industries using charcoal will need to find alternatives to buying charcoal from the region by 2013.
The Brazilian Environment Minister, Carlos Minc, has set out the government plans explaining that government funding will be established for the planting of forests. The government also intends to reduce the reliance on charcoal from the area's forests.
The plans are contained in the PPCerrado, and are an enlargement of Resolution 3545 of the Central Bank, which does not allow credit to be extended to companies not complying with environmental legislation. The measure is already in place for producers in the Amazon and will now be extended to those in the Cerrado.
According to Minc, it is feasible to increase agricultural production and protect the environment at the same time. He commented: "It is possible to recover millions of hectares of degraded land if we provide encouragement."
In addition, the list of products on the Minimum Price General Policy document for Cerrado will be extended. The list will now also include mangaba, baru and buriti.
Minc said that the process is underway for the PPCerrado to become an interministerial plan.
