Brazil setting forestry industry standard, says Ghanaian official

04/08/2010
A Ghanaian forestry leader has urged his government to look to the example set by Brazil to learn how to improve the country's forestry industry.

Samuel Afari Dartey, the acting chief executive officer of the west African nation's Forestry Commission, said the development of the industry was being hampered by a lack of financial assistance, land and modern technology.

"Ghana's reliance on natural forests for commercial purposes and our inability to replant trees felled can also be said to be factors militating against the forestry industry," he told a gathering of forestry experts in the country's capital, Accra, this week.

Mr Dartey, who was addressing the opening session of a day's seminar organised by Ghana Institute of Foresters (GIF) on Tuesday, called for the establishment of special funds to cater for the forestry sector.

He appealed to government to shadow the actions of countries like Brazil and Chile, which have made dramatic headway in the forestry industry and to totally reform the sector to stimulate individual and corporate investment.

The seminar was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Forestry Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.
