Biofuels market looks strong in 2009, say farmers

03/04/2009
The National Farmers Union (NFU) says the biofuels industry is in an upbeat mood, according to its chief advisor for renewable energy, Jonathan Scurlock.

Although food-crop based biofuels suffered from a public relations crisis in 2008, the future looks brighter with next generation biofuels set for success.

Speakers at the World Biofuels Markets 09 conference pointed out the fundamental catalyst for biofuels, aside from purely environmental issues, is that the price of oil remains high at $45 per barrel and as the recession deepens this price becomes increasingly unaffordable.

Other speakers included representatives from the Rainforest Alliance and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Both these group were keen to recommend measures such as increased yields, cascading of biomass resource and the restoring of degraded land. The NFU says it would also support such measures to ensure that biofuels minimise harm to environment.

Andre Lago, the Brazilian minister, stated that the country is making use of biofuels, with more than 50% of transport fuel in Sao Paolo being made from bioethanol. and 17% of electricity made from ‘bagasse’ or sugar cane residue.
