African mahogany plantations in Australia a good investment
22/03/2010
A government report in North Queensland, Australia, has described a recent harvest of African mahogany as “pleasing”, with the forestry plots producing above-average yields of high-grade, marketable timber.
The principal scientist from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), Dr Kevin Harding, pointed out: "African mahogany is an established and highly sought-after timber in international markets for high-quality furniture, boat building and veneer products, and has also been used to make musical instruments."
With a mean of 338 cubic metres per hectare of commercial quality saw log over a twenty year period, the African mahogany plantations are generating 204 cubic metres of dried sawn timber for each hectare.
Dr Harding explained that the plantations produced a volume of usable timber that was above average, with only a 6 per cent reject rate. The timber had been assessed in terms of log volume, log end split, shrinkage, wood colour and heartwood/sapwood proportions
At the moment, the price for milled and dried timber board varies between US$1800 and US$2250 per cubic metre, making mahogany a good investment.
Over the past twenty years, landowners in the region were encouraged to plant African mahogany as part of various community forestry projects.
