Scottish trade leaders exploring Brazil opportunities
28/11/2011
Scottish business leaders have embarked on a trade mission to Brazil this week, with the aim of developing the trade links between Scotland and Latin America's largest economy.
The delegation is being led by Scottish Secretary, Michael Moore, who said that they are hoping to gain traction in Brazil with the country's mutual interests in hosting major sporting events. They are then hoping to examine the imports and exports that have proven to be so valuable in past trade between the two nations.
"I think the world sporting calendar provides Scotland with its unique selling point for the next few years," Moore explained. "The fact the UK and Brazil are hosting the world's most prestigious sporting events over the next five years is providing a great link between our two countries and we need to maximise that advantage."
Brazil is hosting the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016, while the Scottish representatives are hoping to share the expertise generated from the UK's hosting of the Olympics next year, and Scotland's hosting of next year's Ryder Cup and the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Scotland currently exports around £180 million worth of goods to Brazil, out of the UK's total of £1.4 billion. Scottish economic leaders are aiming to double this figure by 2015.
