Pará remains Brazil's biggest timber producer
12/07/2010
The northern state of Pará remained Brazil's largest producer of timber in 2009, generating a total harvest of 6.5 million cubic metres of tropical roundwood during the year.
The revenue produced from this harvest was more than R$2.1 billion – approaching half of the national gross revenue of R$4.94 for the whole of the timber industry.
As well as being the largest producer, however, it was also the biggest consumer of roundwood, taking 46 per cent of the amount produced, followed by Mato Grosso with 28 per cent and Rondônia with 16 per cent.
The large harvest in the state also proved a boon for jobs, with 92,423 direct and indirect jobs created from the timber industry across Pará, out of a national total of 203,701 created by more than 1,000 timber companies.
The timber sector production figures for 2009 were published by the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) in a report entitled, 'The logging activity in the Brazilian Amazon: production, revenues and markets.'
The figures were published at the same time as a group of Brazilian furniture moguls predicted that the furniture industry will experience significant growth this year.
Orchestra Brazil is a union of 65 companies from Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte. They came together with the intention of expanding furniture exports - particularly to other Latin American countries and Europe.
They said they were expecting a five per cent growth in exports this year, rising to 15 per cent in 2011.
