Optimism for Brazil economy
19/12/2011
President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, has said she has “optimistic expectations” about the nation's economy for 2012 and that she anticipates a growth rate of five per cent.
Rousseff said that anti-crisis measures implemented by the Government had helped Brazil’s economy to avoid the problems connected to the global financial crisis brewing throughout 2011.
Guido Mantega, Brazil’s finance minister, said he was also optimistic about the Brazilian economy in 2012. He recently commented that he expects Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) to be up four to five per cent in the next year. This projection is much more ambitious than the financial market’s prediction. In a recent market survey, top Brazilian economists said they expected a growth rate of just 3.4 per cent.
Brazil’s GDP did not register any growth between June and September of 2011, although it did grow 3.2 per cent between January and September when compared to the previous year’s figures.
President Rousseff has also said she expects the country’s rate of inflation to remain manageable in the New Year. From January to November 2011, Brazil’s inflation rate reached 5.97 per cent – coming close to the inflation target’s upper limit.
