Logging industry remains chief employer in Brazilian Amazon

30/08/2010
The commercial logging industry remains the largest overall source of employment in nearly all of the municipalities that make up the Brazilian Amazon region of Northern Mato Grosso.

Timber Industry Association of Northern Mato Grosso highlighted that in Cotriguaçu – a municipality 970 km north-west of Cuiaba city – more than 1,000 people in the 14,000-strong population are directly employed by the timber industry.

The forests of Cotriguaçu are home to many commercial timber species including Jatobá, Ipê, Cumaru, Caxeta, Tauari and Pinho Cuiabano. It is monitored by the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) with support from the National Security Force in the enforcement of the federal and state environmental legislations.

Output from the largest timber company in the region is approximately 1,000 cubic metres of rotary cut veneer and 100,000 square metres of sliced veneer per month, with 800 cubic metres of sawnwood and processed solid wood also produced.

The company has potential for even greater production, as it is waiting for the approval of sustainable forest management plans by federal authorities to increase the raw material supply.

The numbers are indicative of the increasing priority being given to the timber industry in Brazil. Rising demand for timber has come from increased investment opportunities and a rising export value.
