Investment in Brazilian renewables pays off

Investment in Brazil's rapid development of alternative and renewable energy sources has paid off significantly this week, after national energy giant Petrobas announced that its first complete wind farm project has been brought online some eight months ahead of schedule.
The project is a complex of four separate installations in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the north-east of Brazil. It is already operating commercially and selling electricity in to the Brazilian National Grid.
The four sites in the complex each contain 52 turbines, standing 108 metres high, with 42 metre fibreglass blades. Each site is capable of generating enough energy to provide the electricity for 350,000 people. A spokesman for the state-controlled Petrobras said the early completion of the turbine project was a huge boon both for the company and for Brazil as a whole.
The construction of the turbines has also provided a significant number of jobs in Brazil, as they were entirely constructed domestically, in three different factory sites by manufacturer Wobben. The Brazilian-built turbines have also been exported to a growing list of countries worldwide, indicating the strength of Brazil's presence on the global manufacturing stage.
