Canada and Taiwan discuss sustainable forestry

03/03/2010
A workshop was held last Thursday in a bid to encourage Canada and Taiwan to share their unique outlooks on, and experiences of, forestry management.

The “Sustainable Forestry Management Workshop” was intended to help sustain a livable environment while managing forests. The object of the workshop was to provide a platform from which Taiwanese and Canadian forest managers could share their experiences and share ideas for the development of the industry.

It was organised by the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) in conjunction with the Forest Products Association Canada. CTOT’s executive director Scott Fraser stated, “with 10 percent of the world's forests, Canada accepts the reality that its forest management has global implications.” He added, “every year, Canada regenerates close to 700,000 hectares of forest — more than all other countries combined.”

It makes sense for Taiwan and Canada to collaborate in the event as Taiwan is currently one of Canada’s primary trading partners. It imports around C$60 million worth of Canadian timber ever year. In addition, Taiwan is a country with 72 per cent forestry coverage and used to be a major lumber exporter itself. The workshop should help it to develop its timber industry once more.
