Brazilian wood-powered plant plans revealed

30/07/2010
Brazilian paper and pulp producer, Suzano, has revealed plans to invest up to US $1.3 billion in the creation of a renewable energy unit, that would sell wood pellets to European biomass stations.

The company's chief executive, Antonio Maciel Neto, at a press conference to announce the project this week, that the timber-powered unit would see the construction of three plants that would generate energy through the burning of the pellets.

It is currently being worked on under the name of Suzano Energia Renovavel, with operations estimated to commence in 2013 or 2014. Each facility, said Maciel Neto, would have a capacity of 1 million tonnes.

He added that the pellets would be of tremendous use to EU nations, who are all striving to meet the stringent curbs on carbon emissions. He added that it was a new, more cost-effective direction for the company, the amount of resources and time necessary to produce 1 million tonnes of pellets could be less than half of that required to produce the same quantity of pulp.

The company estimates that initial annual revenues could be as much as $480 million, and that plans are being drawn up for two further facilities to be built between 2018 and 2019 if demand is sufficient.
