Brazilian timber exports show welcome growth

07/07/2010
Timber exports from Brazil jumped by 27 per cent in May this year, compared to the value for May 2009.

The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) reported that $226 million worth of timber was exported in May 2010, significantly up on the $177 million exported in the same month in 2009.

The timber figures demonstrated the lucrative value of investments in the commodity, despite other wood formats showing significant falls.

Pine sawnwood exports dropped by 1.5 per cent to $13.4 million, with the volume of the commodity falling from 71,200 cubic metres to 59,500 cubic metres year on year.

Exports of tropical sawnwood also all fell both in volume and value, from 46,700 cubic metres in May 2009 to 44,400 cubic metres in May 2010. The value drop registered at $21.2 million, down from $22.5 million.

Pine plywood, however, experienced the biggest surge of all, with a year-on-year rise of 80 per cent, from $21 million to $37 million, and demonstrated a 21 per cent rise in volume to 100,300 cubic metres.

One of the most productive areas of the Amazonian nation was the state of Mato Grosso, which in April saw 1,348 cubic metres of roundwood, more than 27,000 cubic metres of sawnwood and 18,603 cubic metres of plywood exported.

The industry accounted for 3.5 per cent of the state’s total exports.
