Brazilian president on European investor mission
03/10/2011
Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff, will be using her first presidential trip to Europe this week to court major investors for the nation's telecommunications and air transport infrastructure programmes.
The nation is looking to attract 70 billion reais (US$37.2 billion) to ensure its broadband network is world class and its air capabilities can offer sufficient access for European airlines in time for the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016.
The Brazilian communications minister, Paulo Bernardo, said, "In the next few days, Dilma will present interim measures to eliminate taxes on the construction of communications networks. In our estimation ... in the next five years, there will be investments of the order of 70 billion reais in the construction of telecommunications networks."
The trip to Europe is considered to be of paramount importance by the Brazilian government, as the EU is one of Brazil's most important trading partners. Major Western European companies - including Portugal Telecom, Telcom Italia and Telefónica of Spain - are some of Brazil's biggest telecom operators, while car manufacturers including Volkswagen and Fiat are among the dominant producers of cars.
Ms Rousseff will spend around a week in Europe, with many meetings taking place in Brussels. She will also travel to Bulgaria, where her father was born, and then Turkey.
