Brazil on track to become a global 'environmental power'

05/10/2011
One of the world's foremost climate change experts has hailed Brazil's potential to become an "environmental power", and play a leading role in the international agenda for sustainable development.

Carlos Nobre, the engineer and meteorologist who shared the 2007 Noble Peace Prize, as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that Brazil had an abundance of talent, knowledge and resources that can place it at the cutting edge.

"Brazil does not want to be a hegemonic military power, but it has the potential to explore a new model of tropical development and to be an environmental power by fully utilising renewable energy within the next 20 to 30 years," Nobre explained.

He said that its "natural knowledge economy" could well set the country apart from the rest of the world, and that it had every chance of being "the cleanest country in the world in the energy sector, in production, and in sustainable agriculture."

Nobre said that Brazil was imbued with a national aspiration towards sustainable development, which sets it apart from other emerging economies, such as China and India. This, he explained, is largely due to its high proportion of natural resources per capita. He said it was possible for Brazil to be 80 per cent reliant on renewable energy sources by 2050.
